Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Learning to Question. Learning to Think. Learning to Know.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is an integral component of the IB Diploma Programme Core at TRIO World Academy. It encourages students to move beyond simply acquiring knowledge and to explore a fundamental question:

"How do we know what we know?"

TOK is built around thoughtful questions that encourage students to examine the nature of knowledge, the evidence behind what we believe, and the perspectives that shape our understanding.

Theory of Knowledge

Students explore questions such as:

  • What makes evidence reliable?
  • How do we decide what is true?
  • How do culture and personal experience influence knowledge?
  • Can different perspectives lead to different interpretations?

Thinking Beyond the Classroom

At TRIO, TOK connects learning across subjects and to the real world. Through discussion, inquiry and reflection, students learn to question assumptions, recognise bias, consider diverse perspectives and develop well-reasoned arguments.

TOK helps students become:

  • Critical and independent thinkers
  • Open-minded and reflective learners
  • Confident evaluators of evidence
  • Responsible users of knowledge

TOK Assessment

TOK is assessed through two components:

  • TOK Exhibition: Students explore how knowledge questions emerge in real-world situations.
  • TOK Essay: Students develop a sustained, critical exploration of a prescribed knowledge question in a 1,600-word essay.

Why TOK Matters

In an increasingly interconnected and uncertain world, students encounter more information and perspectives than ever before. TOK gives them the tools to question, evaluate and understand that information thoughtfully.

At TRIO World Academy, TOK helps students connect what they learn with how they think, developing not just knowledgeable students, but curious, reflective and responsible thinkers ready to engage with the world.
