Language Programmes

French & Spanish Ab Initio

Beginners’ Language Course

The Ab Initio programme is designed for students with little or no prior experience in the language. Students develop practical communication skills through themes related to everyday life.

Themes include:

  • Identity and relationships
  • Experiences and routines
  • Human ingenuity
  • Social organisation
  • Sharing the planet

Students will learn to:

  • Communicate in familiar situations
  • Understand and respond to spoken and written texts
  • Express opinions and ideas
  • Develop confidence in real-life language use
  • Explore cultures of French- and Spanish-speaking communities

Language B – Standard Level (SL)

Building Confidence and Communication

English, French & Spanish Language B SL is intended for students with previous language-learning experience. Students deepen their linguistic skills while exploring global and cultural topics.

Focus Areas:

  • Effective communication
  • Cultural understanding
  • Text analysis and interpretation
  • Writing for different purposes and audiences
  • Oral communication skills

Students engage with a variety of authentic resources such as articles, videos, literature extracts, podcasts, and current events.

Language B – Higher Level (HL)

Advanced Language and Critical Thinking

English, French & Spanish Language B HL challenges students to achieve a higher level of linguistic proficiency and intercultural awareness.

In addition to core themes, HL students:

  • Analyse complex texts
  • Develop sophisticated writing skills
  • Engage in critical discussion and debate
  • Explore literary works
  • Demonstrate nuanced understanding of language and culture

The programme prepares students for university study and global careers requiring multilingual communication.

Assessment in IB Languages

Assessment includes a balanced evaluation of language skills to develop both language proficiency and intercultural competence.

Internal Assessment (IA):
